WKC Group conducts a capture and relocation programme for the Critically Endangered Persian Wonder Gecko following the findings of a Terrestrial Ecology Survey.

The findings of the Terrestrial Ecology Survey undertaken for a proposed road alignment highlighted the presence of the Arabian IUCN Red List, Critically Endangered Persian Wonder Gecko (Teratoscincus keyserlingii). Hence in accordance with EAD guidelines, a species specific relocation programme was implemented.

Day Night Survey

Persian Wonder Gecko

Wonder Geckos are nocturnal and are found only on coastal sand dunes and sheets with dominant vegetation comprising of Pennisetum divisum and Panicum turgidum. Being nocturnal, the gecko live within a burrow system, often found at the base of the grasses where they will dig down to the moister subsurface. The geckos are aggressive, yet agile predators, able to leap to catch moths. However, the most intriguing behaviour of the gecko is its distinct defense mechanism. If threatened the gecko will stand on its tiptoes with its mouth wide open and shake its tail producing a ‘hissing’ sound in an attempt to scare off the threat.

The relocation focused on a road development in Abu Dhabi where WKC identified a population of the gecko. Within Arabia, this species is endemic to the UAE further highlighting its conservation importance. Following collaboration with the client and the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi, WKC identified a suitable release location for the geckos. The relocation program resulted in the successful capture of 24 animals, 10 of which were released to the receptor site whilst 14 animals were provided to Al Ain Zoo to assist in the conservation of this highly endangered species.

Through careful planning and coordination we have managed to save a small, albeit, significant percentage of this amazing species of gecko. To be a part of this study was a privilege but more importantly, conserving nature is a key objective within the ecology team at WKC.
